Accommodations: The King Oceanfront Rooms are the best in the house, only 20 feet from where the land ends and drops to the ocean, and including, in addition to all the standard appointments, fireplaces, private patios, overstuffed easy chairs, and 70-gallon soaking tubs. NOTE: The hotel is situated on a bluff, but a low one, and the rocky coast does harbor tide pools and beaches. King Ocean View Rooms are 100 feet from land's end, and also have fireplaces and patios; interconnecting rooms are available in this category. Family Rooms are the most affordable, and have paired queen beds, and at least partial ocean views. Standard in all are air-conditioning/climate control, satellite TV, DVD players, phones, data ports, stocked mini-bars, alarm clocks, hairdryers, irons/ironing boards, and bath amenities. All are nonsmoking. Small pets are welcome.
Dining & Entertainment: The hotel's restaurant, The Cavalier, serves an array of entrees and daily specials, with a selection of local wines and a full bar; The Cavalier is open from 7:00am-9:00pm (till 10:00pm during the summer). Room service operates during the same hours. Guests gather around the nightly beachside bonfires to sip wine and enjoy the sound of the surf (a great romantic evening for couples). There's dozens of dining options in San Simeon, including a number that are within walking distance of the property.
Recreation: You're right along California's Highway 1, a designated "All-American Road," considered by many the most scenic road in America. There are tons of attractions nearby, most notably Hearst Castle, 3 miles to the North, the most elaborate house ever built in America, a conglomerate of Spanish, Roman, and Gothic architecture. The hotel has a spa and a heated outdoor pool, and an exercise room. Water sports, shopping, and wine-tasting are other local attractions. TIP: For a close-up look at the massive and cute Californian Elephant Seals, head to the beaches found 7 miles north of the hotel.
